Tragic Flash Flooding Claims Lives in New Mexico Village
Severe rainfall results in at least three fatalities as Ruidoso grapples with historic flooding conditions.
At least three individuals have lost their lives in the village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, following intense rainfall that triggered severe flash flooding. Reports indicate that up to 8.8 cm (3.5 inches) of rain fell, raising the Ruidoso River to unprecedented levels. Local authorities confirmed the fatalities, including a man and two children, who were swept away by the ferocious waters.
The situation remains critical as search and rescue crews work diligently in the aftermath. Kerry Gladden, a spokesperson for the Village of Ruidoso, stated that a hotline has been established for those seeking information on missing family members. Emergency teams have conducted over 50 swift water rescues, advising residents to relocate to safer, higher ground to avoid further peril.
Ruidoso's local hospital has treated at least three individuals suffering from injuries related to the flooding, as shared by Ms. Gladden in a recent press release. Footage captured by local artist Kaitlyn Carpenter shows the devastating moment a house was carried away by the strong currents. Mayor Lynn Crawford expressed the chaos of the situation on local radio, remarking, "It got ugly really quick."
The full scope of the damages in Ruidoso is still under evaluation. The National Weather Service had previously issued warnings of increased flash flooding risks due to two "burn scars" near the village, remnants of the wildfires that ravaged southern New Mexico in June 2024. These burn areas contributed to the rain-soaked ground's inability to absorb water, increasing the likelihood of flooding substantially.
Last year’s wildfires devastated around 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) of land surrounding Ruidoso, resulting in two fatalities and the destruction of numerous homes. Experts had noted a heightened risk of significant flooding events in the region in the years following the fires.
As Ruidoso deals with this devastating natural disaster, the impact of similar weather conditions is also being felt in Texas, where Governor Greg Abbott reported a tragic death toll of 109 and 161 missing individuals due to last week’s flooding events. The spotlight is once again on the implications of climate change as communities across the United States face worsening extreme weather phenomena.
