In brief
A Houthi-controlled migrant center in Yemen was attacked, leaving dozens dead and exacerbating tensions in the region.
In a devastating incident reported on Monday, dozens of African migrants lost their lives following an assault on a facility located in Houthi-controlled northern Yemen. Officials from the Iran-backed Houthi militia claim that an American airstrike targeted what they referred to as a migrant center in Saada, resulting in the deaths of at least 68 individuals. Despite these allegations, the U.S. military has not yet responded to requests for clarification. The attack occurred shortly after the U.S. military declared it had conducted over 800 strikes against Houthi positions since mid-March, part of a broader campaign to eliminate key military targets. This operation reportedly focused on command-and-control facilities and weapon storage, although civilian casualties were not acknowledged by U.S. officials.According to Houthi representatives, civilian casualties have been significant, with claims of over 100 deaths attributed to recent strikes. The latest incident was condemned as a “heinous crime against African migrants.” Tensions between the Houthis and the U.S. military have intensified, with conflicting narratives surrounding civilian fatalities from recent attacks. Last week, U.S. Central Command stated that an explosion which killed 12 people in the capital was due to a misfired Houthi missile, countering the militia's assertion of American responsibility in that incident. Footage released by the Houthi-affiliated al-Masirah news channel displayed harrowing scenes, reporting bodies buried under rubble and at least 40 injured migrants being treated, according to aid officials who chose to remain anonymous pending further investigation.Every year, hundreds of thousands of African migrants undertake the dangerous crossing from the Horn of Africa to Gulf nations via Yemen, seeking better prospects. The International Organization for Migration noted that nearly 60,900 migrants arrived in Yemen throughout 2024.As the situation continues to evolve, the Houthis have also expanded their military operations to include attacks on Israel and maritime vessels in the Red Sea, framing their actions as solidarity measures for Palestinians in Gaza. The U.S. bombing campaign against the Houthis was intensified on March 15, after directives from President Trump emphasized a commitment to military intervention until the militia posed no further threat.
