In brief
In the midst of escalating violence in Syria, hundreds of civilians have sought shelter at the Russian-operated Hmeimim air base, according to recently reviewed satellite footage. This unrest follows violent clashes ignited by the new government led by Ahmed al-Shara as they confront opposing factions loyal to the former regime under Bashar al-Assad.
Evidence collected by The New York Times shows a significant influx of people taking refuge in a compound adjoining Hmeimim and Latakia International Airport in close proximity to the coastal city of Jableh, the epicenter of recent turmoil. Videos from the weekend captured large crowds outside the base, with protestors demanding “international protection.” Additional imagery revealed clusters of civilian vehicles parking within the base’s confines and children receiving food from Russian military personnel. Military tents have also been erected at the airport, reflecting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. The violence that ignited last week has resulted in a staggering death toll of over 1,300 individuals, reported primarily within Latakia and Tartus Provinces, as per the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Approximately 1,000 of those fatalities are believed to be civilians, predominantly due to fire from government-aligned armed groups seeking to consolidate control over the region. Despite the gravity of the situation, independent verification of the casualty figures remains elusive, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the conflict.
