In brief
The messaging platform is set to record its first profit, fueled by innovative monetization strategies and rigorous content policing.
In recent months, Telegram has been in dialogue with investors who previously lent the company over $2 billion. The objective is to assure these stakeholders of the company’s potential amid growing legal scrutiny, particularly following the arrest of its founder, Pavel Durov, in France in August due to alleged illicit activities on its platform. The discussions reveal that Telegram is actively addressing its legal obligations by ramping up efforts to moderate user-generated content. Investors reported that the company has managed to reduce a significant portion of its debt, as stated by an insider who preferred to remain unnamed due to confidentialities surrounding the talks. The app has faced mounting scrutiny for allowing criminal activities, including child exploitation and drug trafficking, to proliferate on its platform. However, alongside these challenges, Telegram is under pressure to demonstrate its financial viability to counter doubters of its sustainability within the competitive social media landscape.Unlike major social media players such as Meta, Telegram has taken a distinct route. It has chosen not to rely on venture capital funding, extensive advertising, or aggressive hiring campaigns. Instead, it has depended on Durov’s personal wealth to manage operations, alongside accruing debt and venturing into the cryptocurrency realm. Now, Telegram is eager to demonstrate that it can stabilize its finances and navigate through its legal dilemmas without sacrificing its independence, with an eye towards a potential initial public offering (IPO). Enhancements in content moderation have led to the hiring of over 750 contractors tasked with policing content on the platform. Moreover, Telegram has broadened its revenue streams by introducing advertising, subscription options, and video services, while utilizing cryptocurrency to alleviate existing debts. As a result, Telegram is reportedly on track to achieve profitability for the first time, with anticipated revenues exceeding $1 billion—a substantial rise from the nearly $350 million earned in the previous year. The company has also amassed about $500 million in cash reserves, exclusive of cryptocurrency assets.
