President Volodymyr Zelensky has reshuffled the leadership of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), replacing influential Vasyl Malyuk and nominating Maj-Gen Yevhenii Khmara as acting head.

The SBU is primarily concerned with internal security and counter-intelligence and, since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, has played a key role in operations including assassinations and sabotage attacks deep inside Russia.

Malyuk, who led the SBU since 2022, gained a reputation for successful operations against Russia, including the notorious Spider Web attack, which saw over 100 Ukrainian drones strike air bases in Russian territory. His abrupt dismissal has sparked criticism from various military leaders.

Khmara's appointment aims to restore confidence in the SBU's effectiveness. Analysts, however, are divided on whether his experience will translate successfully into a leadership role. Some believe his connection with previous operations will benefit the SBU, while others worry about his limited capabilities in broader strategic management.

Despite facing backlash for the decision, Zelensky emphasized the need for continued asymmetric operations against Russian forces. Moreover, Malyuk will continue to lead special operations against Russia after his dismissal.

This latest change is part of a series of appointments within Zelensky's team, including nominations for ministerial roles, amidst criticisms concerning the timing and implications of these reshuffles during an ongoing war. As Ukraine continues to adapt its strategies on the battlefield, the new leadership arrangements will be closely monitored.
