In brief

Spring's impending arrival inspires us to shed winter's constraints and engage with the world anew.

Daylight Saving Time is upon us, and with it comes a delightful gift: the promise of longer and brighter days. Starting tomorrow, as we set our clocks ahead by one hour, we also embrace a shift in our mindset. The month of March often adds about three minutes of light each day, but this weekend we experience an entire hour of daylight all at once. It’s the time to refresh our homes and our lives, replacing batteries in smoke detectors and planning fresh meals centered around new spring produce. This transitional period, which I fondly call The Great Thaw, feels like a collective release. While winter can bring a cozy atmosphere filled with gatherings and warm drinks, it also encourages a sense of retreat. We bundle ourselves tightly, both physically and emotionally, as we navigate through the colder, darker months. However, with the arrival of spring light, many of us begin to feel ready to exhale and re-engage.“Daylight Saving Time Begins” marks a celebratory shift in our calendars — it symbolizes liberation from the constraints we impose upon ourselves in winter. It’s a time when our plans morph from mere responsibilities into spontaneous gatherings under the sun. The tight, sometimes fearful approach of winter gives way to the acceptance that it’s time to open up, share, and engage without hesitation. As nature brightens around us, we find ourselves confronted with the dualities inherent to this season: the contrast between contraction and expansion, caution and openness. This seasonal transition invites us to reflect on how we can also shift internally, allowing ourselves to break free from the confines we’ve placed around our time and emotions. How can we harness this external change to inspire personal growth? How can the light that breaks the chill be a guide to our own journey of growth? As we usher in this unofficial kickoff to spring, let us pose questions that promote growth, connection, and transformation. Let the commencement of longer days be an invitation to leave behind our winter cartels of restraint and embrace a more liberated mode of living.
