Twins divide a wedding: Four hearts, one ceremony in Ibadan

When a church congregation in south‑west Nigeria gathered on a Saturday, they knew they were witnessing a rare event: a joint wedding that united two pairs of twins in a single celebration. The ceremony was held in Ibadan, a city where the Yoruba people celebrate a remarkable twin birth rate as a blessing.

The meeting of minds began when the four met at the University of Ibadan over ten years ago. Though an initial meeting was hesitant, friendship grew, and future plans took shape after each pursued studies abroad and careers across the continent.

Taiwo Oguntoye, who now lives in the United Kingdom, recalled the first day: “We first spoke as friends. I dreamed of noble twins to marry, but destiny had another plan.” His brother Kehinde echoed the sentiment, pointing out that both were born under a cultural tradition that eulogises twins as family blessings, with distinct names—Taiwo means ‘the one that tests the world’ and Kehinde ‘the one that came after’.

The joint ceremony was performed under a white gospel altar. Two couples walked down a single aisle together, substituting mutual vows that blend both families’ traditions. The ritual included the exchange of items that represent shared destiny—a ritual commonly followed in Yoruba weddings to symbolise unity.

Guests applauded from the church balconies. The core family was surrounded by their shared extended relatives, many of whom are twins themselves. Local people praised the Oguntoye twins for conventions that celebrate unity, and the event served as a living testament to how cultural ties weave against modern life.

While the couples will live apart for now, as their careers remain in different continents, they remain deeply connected. Taiwo expressed his hope: “We will preserve our love story by seeing each other as regularly as we can.” Each pair’s new life promise is a continuation of a tradition that blossoms when support, faith and love combine.

This unusual celebration will stay fresh in the rosters of 2010s‑Nigeria wedding stories for years, a beauty of fraternal and identical twins being celebrating a shared life together.
