The remains of at least 50 infants and six adults have been dumped at a graveyard in Trinidad and Tobago, police say. The country's police service (TTPS) stated that the bodies were found in the town of Cumuto, about 40km (25 miles) from the capital Port of Spain on Trinidad. A preliminary investigation indicated that it may be a case of an 'unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses'. It remains unclear if the incident is connected to gang violence in a country that suffers from one of the highest murder rates in Latin America and the Caribbean. The police statement revealed that five of the six adults — four men and two women — had identification tags. Two showed signs of having undergone post-mortem examinations. The discovery has been described as 'deeply troubling' by police commissioner Allister Guevarro, who emphasized that any individual or institution responsible for violations will be held fully accountable. A state of emergency providing police with extended powers of search and arrest has been renewed since March 2. The US state department has issued multiple travel advisories in light of the heightened crime and terrorism risks. Despite a reported drop in violent crime since 2024, crime continues to pose challenges across Trinidad and Tobago.
