At Brown University, a shooting that occurred during a study group has left two students dead and nine others wounded. MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old aspiring neurosurgeon from Brandermill, Virginia, and 19-year-old Ella Cook, a student leader of the campus Republicans from Birmingham, Alabama, were tragically killed when a gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering building.
On Saturday, as the semester drew to a close, Umurzokov was engaged in an economics final review session when chaos ensued. Investigators are still searching for the assailant who fled the scene, but relatives of the victims have expressed their grief and disbelief.
Umurzokov’s sister, Samira, shared how her brother overcame significant hardships to pursue a career in medicine, driven by his childhood experiences with surgery and health challenges. His commitment to helping others, particularly immigrant students, was a hallmark of his character.
Cook, beloved by her peers, served as vice president of the Brown College Republicans. Described as a light in her community, she was deeply involved in her church and dedicated to uplifting those around her.
As the university community mourns the loss, president Christina Paxson noted that one of the eight wounded is in critical condition while others are stable. The campus community is rallying in support of the victims' families and those injured.
This horrific event has raised numerous questions concerning campus security and gun violence, prompting discussions about safety measures in educational institutions.
