A 'person of interest' who was detained in connection with a deadly shooting at Brown University in the US will be released shortly, local officials have said. Providence Police Chief Col Oscar Perez stated that there was not enough evidence to prosecute the detained person, with Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha adding that the evidence 'now points in a different direction'. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are searching for additional video evidence that could help track down the suspect, the local mayor noted.
Two people were killed and nine others injured after a gunman opened fire at the Ivy League university in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday. During a joint news conference on Sunday, Col Perez revealed that investigators did not believe the detained individual was the same person seen in CCTV footage released on the day of the attack. The footage shows a suspect leaving the scene dressed in all black.
Following the release of the footage, FBI director Kash Patel stated a person of interest was apprehended at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, thanks to a lead from Providence Police. Col Perez confirmed at that time that officers were not looking for anyone else and were working with prosecutors to gather evidence.
Earlier reports from Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated that seven of the injured individuals remained stable, one in critical condition, while another had been discharged from the hospital. The gunman opened fire around 4 PM local time during a class at Brown University's Holley engineering building. The identities of the deceased and most of the injured have not yet been disclosed, although it was confirmed that all victims were students. In a related note, one of the injured, identified as Kendall Turner, is an alumna from a private school in North Carolina.
Brown University President Christina Paxson expressed her sorrow in a statement, confirming that support is being extended to the families affected by the incident. In light of the tragedy, a vigil was scheduled for Sunday evening to honor the victims, while around 2,000 students were relocated to safe locations overnight. Police continue to investigate the shooting, emphasizing the community's need for support during this difficult time.
