A shooting Saturday at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, left two people dead and at least eight other critically injured. Authorities were still searching for a suspect in the hours afterward.

The shooting occurred on a Saturday afternoon in a campus building where final exams were underway. The suspect was described as dressed in black and fled the scene on foot, according to officials.

In response to the violence, a shelter-in-place order was issued for the surrounding university area. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated, “We have all available resources” to locate the suspect.

“Sadly, today is a day that the city of Providence and the state of Rhode Island prayed would never come,” the mayor conveyed. “We’ve heard about horrific acts of gun violence and active shooter situations in other places, but not here.”

Brown University is a prestigious private institution with approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and over 3,000 graduate students.

This tragic event adds to the growing list of deadly shootings at U.S. college campuses in recent history, highlighting the persistent issue of gun violence within educational institutions.
