PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Police responded to an active shooting Saturday on campus at Brown University in Providence, according to the school’s alert system.
Officials initially indicated a suspect was in custody, only to later revise their statement, confirming that the manhunt for a suspect or suspects is still underway.
The incident unfolded in proximity to the Barus & Holley building—a substantial seven-story facility home to both the School of Engineering and the Physics Department, containing numerous laboratories, offices, and classrooms.
Kristy DosReis, the city’s chief public information officer, stated that officials are actively collecting information from the ongoing investigation at the scene.
Brown University, a private Ivy League institution, serves approximately 7,300 undergraduates and over 3,000 graduate students, according to their official site. The timing of the incident is notable as it falls on the second day of final exams for the fall semester, raising additional safety concerns for the campus community.
