A devastating bus accident in South Africa resulted in the deaths of 42 individuals, predominantly Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals, who were returning home. The tragedy unfolded on Sunday night on a mountainous part of the N1 highway in Limpopo province. According to local transport officials, the bus veered off the road along a steep mountain pass, plunging down an embankment.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed deep sorrow over the high death toll, which includes seven children. He emphasized that this disaster not only signifies a great loss for South Africa but also affects its neighboring countries of Zimbabwe and Malawi.

The precise cause of the crash is currently unknown, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. Reports indicate that the bus was en route from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, but the total number of passengers aboard at the time of the accident remains unclear.

Among the deceased were 18 women and 17 men, alongside the seven children, while a further 49 individuals sustained injuries. Government officials, including Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, plan to visit the crash site and meet with the injured passengers as investigations proceed.
