CHICAGO (OnPoint) — Authorities in Spain are intensifying their search for James 'Jimmy' Gracey, a 20-year-old student from the University of Alabama who was reported missing after a night out with friends in Barcelona.

Gracey, who resides in Elmhurst, Illinois, was last seen at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday outside of the Shoko nightclub near Barceloneta Beach. Having separated from his companions, he did not return to his rented accommodation.

His family described him as a 'kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother,' expressing deep concern over his unexpected disappearance. 'It is completely out of character for him not to check in with family and friends,' they stated, highlighting their feelings of worry and urgency.

To aid in the search, regional Catalan police have deployed air patrols and underwater teams, scouring the areas around where he was last seen. Friends of Gracey have also taken proactive measures by posting missing person notices throughout the city.

The University of Alabama is actively supporting the family during this distressing time and encourages anyone with information regarding Gracey's whereabouts to reach out to the local authorities. 'We are in direct communication with the family, offering all possible assistance,' a university spokesperson said.

Gracey is an active member of the Theta Chi fraternity on campus, holding two leadership positions within the organization. The fraternity is also in touch with federal lawmakers and involved in ongoing efforts to locate him.

The search continues as his family and friends remain hopeful for his safe return.
