In brief

Police discovered three more bodies—two women and a man—at the shooter's house, likely members of his immediate family. The find follows a violent incident in Krakow’s Main Market Square that left six dead and 15 injured, drawing visits from the Prime Minister and other national leaders.

On November 8, Polish police announced that they had found three additional bodies in the home of the suspect in a recent deadly shooting in Krakow. Two women and a man, believed to belong to the shooter’s immediate family, were recovered from the residence, police officials said. Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the information and described the discovery as a “truly exceptional tragedy.”

The initial incident took place on Saturday night in Krakow’s Main Market Square, where a gunman opened fire, killing six people and injuring fifteen, including three police officers. The attacker was apprehended by local authorities at the intersection of Dietla and Stradom streets after a brief chase. A regional police spokesperson stated that the gunman was wearing military clothing and had a military-style long gun. Additional firearms and ammunition were seized from his vehicle.

According to a representative of the regional police, the detained man was identified as Polish and was 24 years old. He did not have any identification documents with him, and his identity was established through operational work. The spokesperson also ruled out a second perpetrator, saying, “According to our findings so far, there was only one perpetrator.”

After the arrest, the scene was secured by prosecutors, police, and other services, who were collecting evidence and investigating the attack. Justice Minister Waldemar Zurek urged the public not to interfere with the investigation and affirmed that the perpetrator would be held accountable. Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz pledged a thorough inquiry into the motives and circumstances of the incident, adding that he was in contact with the interior minister, the regional governor and relevant services.

Mayor of Krakow Lukasz Gibala activated a crisis management team and advised residents to remain calm and act responsibly while expressing sympathy for the victims’ families. President Karol Nawrocki reported that he was coordinating with relevant services and anticipated a full explanation of the events. The head of the National Security Bureau was also on his way to Krakow, according to the official account. The gathered officials, including the Prime Minister, visited the scene to oversee the investigation and offer support to the community.

The discovery of additional bodies in the shooter’s house raises new questions about his background and personal relationships. Police reports indicate that all known remains, including those in the shooter’s residence, have been identified as members of the suspect’s family. No additional victims have been reported in the immediate area, and the investigation continues to seek information about the suspect’s motives and any possible accomplices.

While the police have confirmed that only one gunman was involved, further details concerning his personal history, possible grievances, and the chain of events leading up to the market square attack remain under scrutiny. Investigators are examining the shooter’s previous interactions with law enforcement and any potential indicators of mental distress or external pressures. The investigation also aims to clarify whether additional individuals were present during the attack or had prior knowledge of the shooter’s plans.

The incident and subsequent findings have drawn widespread attention from national leaders and the public. Authorities have expressed a commitment to transparency in the inquiry, promising to share all findings with the public as they become available. The community remains on high alert, and emergency services continue to assess and manage any related safety concerns across Krakow.
