The San Diego City Council on Tuesday sanctioned a record $30 million settlement to the family of Kanoah Wilson, a 16-year-old who was tragically killed by police in a downtown train station incident. This settlement is noted to be one of the largest of its kind in the United States, eclipsing the $27 million accord reached with the family of George Floyd, whose death in 2020 ignited a nationwide call for racial justice and police reform. Surveillance cameras and body-worn footage revealed that on January 28, Wilson was fleeing gunfire when he encountered Officer Daniel Gold, who allegedly discharged his weapon without warning, striking Wilson fatally. The lawsuit filed by Wilson’s family claims this shooting highlights systemic issues regarding police conduct, particularly toward Black individuals. During discussions about the settlement, Council member Henry Foster voiced his emotional concerns about the dangers confronting Black youth, questioning the lack of accountability and progress in the wake of past incidents of racial violence. Currently, Officer Gold is on administrative leave while investigations continue into the shooting.
