A Russian drone and missile strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has killed at least one person and injured seven others, city officials say.
Early on Saturday morning, residential buildings in several districts were hit, and loud explosions could be heard across the city.
Kyiv's mayor Vitaly Klitschko stated that a 13-year-old child was among the injured, with four people taken to the hospital.
Earlier this week, a similar attack on Kyiv resulted in seven fatalities, according to Ukrainian officials. The latest bombardment coincides with Ukrainian negotiators preparing for talks with US officials this weekend regarding an amended peace plan.
The head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, confirmed that Saturday's strike hit multiple targets on the capital's outskirts. He reported that enemy drones were over the city, prompting air defense responses. Currently, one individual has died and seven are injured, including one child.
The body of a man was recovered by rescuers in the Sviatoshynskyi district west of the city, while two women were among the injured in the town of Brovary, east of Kyiv, which also faced missile and drone strikes targeting residential areas.
Klitschko mentioned that the strike ignited a fire in the lower floors of a high-rise apartment block west of the city center, while crews managed to control another blaze in a central district. Earlier this week, a deadly exchange of attacks was reported, killing seven in Kyiv, while Russia's Rostov region experienced three fatalities.
This attack occurs amid President Donald Trump's efforts to guide both sides towards accepting a draft peace plan, which has evolved to accommodate some of Ukraine's concerns. President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his primary demands for ending the conflict, asserting that Russia will halt its offensive only if Ukrainian troops withdraw from the territory claimed by Moscow.
Putin also confirmed the arrival of a US delegation, including special envoy Steve Witkoff, expected in Moscow next week to discuss the peace plan central to negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated in a video address that Ukrainian and US delegations aim to translate the arrangements made in Geneva into a framework that paves the way to peace and security guarantees.
