Parents should monitor children '24/7' on Roblox, says developer
An independent game developer for Roblox has voiced concerns regarding the child safety measures on the platform, suggesting that they do not go far enough. In an exclusive interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, the developer—who requested anonymity—asserted that parents should supervise their children on Roblox 24/7, adding that if this isn’t feasible, then children should refrain from playing entirely.
Roblox, which is extremely popular among children ages eight to twelve, boasts over 80 million global players a day. However, criticisms have emerged regarding the platform's safety protocols, particularly in terms of interactions between young users and potential predators.
The developer explained that while Roblox has implemented mandatory age verification checks, they are far from sufficient. Highlighting his emphasis on safety, he reported that many instances of inappropriate interactions and violent content slip through the cracks, with around 30% of flagged concerns actually getting addressed.
Roblox responded by reaffirming their commitment to safety, detailing a range of measures including content filters intended to protect users. In 2024, they introduced policies aimed at restricting communications between younger players and adults, but critics argue that more stringent measures are necessary.
The warnings from the developer resonate amidst broader concerns regarding online safety for youth. Countries like Russia and Turkey have already banned Roblox due to safety issues, while discussions continue in the UK about regulations that could limit social media exposure for children.
In summary, the developer calls for constant parental oversight as a primary strategy for protecting children on Roblox, reflecting a growing anxiety about the platform's ability to ensure the safety of its young audience.
