Navi Pillay Receives Nobel Peace Prize Amid Global Controversy

South Africa former UN human rights chief and international court judge has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, a decision that has sparked heated debate across diplomatic circles and on social media.

The Nobel committee cited Pillay long-term efforts to promote peace and expand the global legal order after a career that saw her tackle war crimes in Rwanda, Myanmar and Gaza. Her work on international tribunals and her role as chair of the UN inquiry into alleged violations in the occupied Palestinian territory earned her global recognition.

The award has led to a flurry of reactions: U.S. President Donald Trump shared a statement slamming the prize, while Israel foreign ministry condemned the nomination as “weaponising hatred”. The ICC has been the target of new sanctions, and some governments urged restraint over a political message that could be misinterpreted as anti-Israel bias.

In support, leaders from the United Nations, Amnesty International and South Africa president praised Pillay as a steadfast voice of justice, stressing that the prize comes at a time when the rule of law faces unprecedented attacks.
