Israel Expands Offensive Against Hezbollah in Lebanon

The Israeli military has officially greenlit plans for an extensive expansion of ground and air strikes targeting the Lebanese militia Hezbollah. This decision comes in the backdrop of rising tensions and fears of a potential large-scale invasion of Lebanon.

Israel's military campaign against Hezbollah intensified earlier this month after the militia fired rockets into northern Israel, exacerbating the ongoing conflict between US-Israeli forces and Iran-backed groups. Since that escalation, over 1,000 lives have reportedly been lost in Lebanon, as per the Lebanese health ministry's records, with at least 118 children among the deceased.

In addition, the conflict has precipitated a massive humanitarian crisis, displacing over a million people within Lebanon. Israeli officials claim the objective of the military operations is to secure northern Israeli communities from continued Hezbollah attacks. According to the Israeli chief of general staff, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, these plans for targeted ground operations and strikes are set to be prolonged, heightening the fears of more violence and instability in the region.

The Israeli defense minister also ordered the destruction of key infrastructure, including bridges over the Litani River which are believed to be used by Hezbollah for troop movement. Recent Israeli strikes have already caused damage to significant crossings vital for both military and civilian use.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun criticized Israel's actions as a 'prelude to a ground invasion,' contending that such aggressive tactics amount to collective punishment against civilians and may serve to advance Israel's territorial ambitions in Lebanon.

The ongoing conflict, steeped in historical animosities and military confrontations, remains precarious as both sides brace for further escalations.
