PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities are actively searching for leads in the investigation of a tragic shooting incident that claimed the lives of two students at Brown University and left nine others injured. Law enforcement officials are canvassing neighborhoods, reviewing CCTV footage, and pleading for public assistance as they seek the individual responsible for the crime.
On Monday, police released new video footage of the suspected shooter, who was seen wearing a mask and dark clothing. The FBI described the suspect as approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a stocky build and is offering a $50,000 reward for information that could lead to the identification or arrest of the gunman.
Providence's police chief, Col. Oscar Perez, stated during a news conference, We’re asking for the public’s assistance in identifying this individual. Any information could prove vital to the investigation. This plea comes on the heels of the release of an earlier person of interest whom investigators have since cleared.
The shooting unfolded in a classroom during finals week, intensifying concerns over campus security protocols and the apparent lack of video surveillance in the area. Governor Dan McKee has since requested increased police presence in the local schools to reassure students and families.
The two deceased students have been identified as Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore known for her leadership in campus organizations, and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman passionate about becoming a neurosurgeon. Both families and the broader university community are mourning their loss.
As investigations continue, one student recalls the chaotic moment the gunman entered the room where they were studying, illustrating the panic and fear felt among the students. Nine individuals remain hospitalized, with their conditions varying from stable to critical as authorities struggle to piece together the chronology of events leading to the shooting.
In light of this tragedy, a community service is being organized to promote healing and solidarity among students and faculty as they navigate this heartbreaking incident.
