A German activist has been sentenced to eight years in a Hungarian prison for assaulting right-wing extremists and for being a member of an extreme left-wing group.

The 25-year-old, identified only as Maja T., was found guilty of involvement in violent assaults by the group Antifa Ost in the lead-up to an annual commemoration of Nazi soldiers in Budapest.

Supporters have raised concerns regarding whether Maja T. could receive a fair trial, given Hungary's legal recognition of only two genders and the banning of Pride marches.

Last year, Germany's Constitutional Court noted that Maja T. could face discriminatory treatment, arguing that extradition should not proceed.

However, the ruling came too late to prevent the handover, as police had already delivered Maja T. to Hungarian authorities.

The 25-year-old did not comment during the trial and is expected to appeal the verdict.

In 2023, various far-right groups gathered in Budapest to commemorate the anniversary of the end of World War II, which has sparked violent clashes in the past.

German MEP Martin Schirdewan criticized the trial as a political show trial, arguing that the sentence reflects a political agenda rather than a pursuit of justice.

Antifa Ost, characterized as a terrorist group by both Hungary and the US, faces ongoing scrutiny and legal action related to violence incidences.
