A Utah mother who published a children's book about grief after the sudden death of her husband has been found guilty of his murder. A jury determined that Kouri Richins killed her husband in March 2022 by poisoning him with a fentanyl-laced drink. The jury deliberated for approximately three hours before reaching their verdict on Monday.
During the trial, it was revealed that Richins, 35, was in dire financial trouble, having accumulated millions in debt and taken out life insurance policies on her husband while engaging in an extramarital affair. Prosecutors presented over 40 witnesses, including one who sold the drugs used to kill Eric Richins.
Richins' defense did not call any witnesses and rested their case without her testifying. She was also convicted of fraudulently claiming insurance benefits following her husband's death, having falsely believed she would inherit his estate, which was valued at over $4 million. Moreover, it was disclosed that she was planning a future with another man she had been involved with during her marriage.
Authorities alleged that Kouri Richins had attempted to poison her husband previously, nearly resulting in his death. This led to an additional charge of attempted murder. Richins pleaded not guilty to all counts, however, the most serious, aggravated murder, could lead to a prison sentence of 25 years to life. Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth emphasized that Richins wanted to leave her husband without giving up the financial benefits.
Richins’ arrest occurred in March 2023, two months after she released a picture book titled 'Are You With Me?' aimed at helping families cope with loss. Ironically dedicated to her husband, the book was marketed as a source of comfort for those dealing with grief, illustrating a stark contrast to her actions leading to his untimely death. The case continues to garner public attention due to the tragic irony of a bereavement author committing such a grave crime.
