In a poignant moment amidst the backdrop of ongoing conflict, Sundus al-Kurd was finally reunited with her daughter Bisan after a two-year separation. The pair, who had not seen each other since the tumultuous days when the war began, experienced a heartfelt reunion filled with emotions ranging from fear to joy.
The mother, who clutched a pink-embroidered dress while waiting at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, reflected on the painful journey of trying to get her newborn out of the Shifa hospital, which had been occupied by Israeli forces. Sundus spent months living in despair, worried for the fate of her child amidst the chaos.
Earlier this year, news reached Sundus that her daughter had survived and was in a field hospital in Egypt, identified by the pink bracelet she was given at birth. This news sparked a flicker of hope after a long period filled with uncertainty and dread as she continuously saw reports of premature infants not surviving in the very hospital her daughter was in.
The return of youth, including Bisan, has generated mixed feelings in the region, symbolizing both a small victory amid turmoil and the ongoing struggle for families caught in the aftermath of the conflict. Currently, Hamas remains in control of parts of Gaza while international efforts for peace continue to grapple with complex realities.
