In brief
A heart-wrenching incident occurred early Tuesday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 76 people, including families and young children, vacationing in Turkey's ski resorts.
In the predawn hours, as smoke engulfed the Grand Kartal Hotel, messages of desperation were sent from guests who found themselves trapped. A brother and sister conveyed their plea for help through WhatsApp messages, desperately asking their uncle to save them while remaining unable to reach their parents. Unfortunately, their lives were lost along with others in a calamity that has now drawn outrage from the affected communities. The large fire broke out at the hotel located 180 miles east of Istanbul, where many visitors had arrived for winter holiday festivities. Guests and staff at the ski lodge faced a nightmare as thick smoke filled the air, making escape nearly impossible. Survivors have reported the absence of fire alarms and difficulty finding fire escapes, causing further distress during the chaos. According to a statement from a Turkish engineers’ union, photos taken prior to the incident raised concerns since they indicated a lack of a sprinkler system that had been mandated for installation years ago. As sorrow lingers through the families affected, calls for accountability and justice are rising among those mourning their lost loved ones.
