Australian MP Helen Haines Critically Injured in Apparent Attack

Independent MP Helen Haines, 65, is in critical condition after a white Toyota Landcruiser struck her outside her Wangaratta constituency office Monday afternoon. Police say a 43‑year‑old man from nearby Tarrawingee was detained at scene and a knife was found in his vehicle.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the incident as a deliberate act, stating there is no place for violence in a democracy. He added that the political climate has risen in recent weeks, citing an increase in threats against politicians from 951 to 1,067 last year.
The MP was initially taken to a local hospital in Wangaratta before being air‑lifted to Melbourne for intensive care. Police have detained the suspect and counter‑terror teams are investigating whether the attack was intentional. An official said the investigation remains ongoing and it is not yet known if the parties are acquainted.
The incident sparked an outpouring of support from political leaders across the spectrum. Former Labor Member of Parliament David Shoebridge called the MP an extraordinary human being. Opposition leader Angus Taylor expressed deep sadness, while Senator Pauline Hanson highlighted the need for MPs to serve without fear.
Haines has been a key figure in Australia’s anti‑corruption movement, spearheading the establishment of the National Anti‑Corruption Commission in 2021. She has also played a pivotal role in advancing climate and gender equality initiatives with other independent MPs.
The investigation continues as officials assess whether Haines has been targeted specifically or if the incident is part of a broader trend of attacks on public officials.
