In brief
As Nicolás Maduro prepares to start his third term amid alarming dissent and international condemnation, the Venezuelan government ramps up its suppression of opposition voices while using detainees as pawns in a global chess game.
Article Text:Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan president, faces increasing condemnation both domestically and internationally as he prepares to be sworn in for a third six-year term on Friday. His leadership has been marked by a severe decline in Venezuela’s economy, which includes staggering inflation, widespread blackouts, food shortages, and an extensive outflow of citizens seeking better conditions abroad. Should he complete this new term, his party will remain in power for nearly three decades.Maduro's return to the Miraflores presidential palace comes despite millions of Venezuelans voting for change, following an election widely viewed as fraudulent by the United States and other nations. In a show of force, security apparatuses are deployed throughout the capital, Caracas, with police and military units enforcing a strict crackdown that has resulted in the imprisonment of journalists, activists, and community leaders. The opposition's response faces considerable challenge, with Edmundo González, who was touted as the true electoral winner, currently in exile to avoid detention, and María Corina Machado, a prominent opposition leader, operating under the specter of constant threat. She made a rare public appearance at a protest in Caracas on Thursday, where thousands of supporters gathered, chanting for freedom. However, her brief detention by unidentified forces underscores the risks opposition figures face, inhibiting their ability to organize against the regime.Despite the overarching fear instilled by the government, Machado's willingness to risk her safety highlights the persistent desire for change amongst the populace. Nonetheless, the broader atmosphere of intimidation and the regime's augmented surveillance and military presence complicate efforts to mobilize protest against Maduro's upcoming inauguration.
