In brief
Two hikers exploring the Krkonose Mountains found a trove of gold coins and jewelry, prompting historical investigations into the treasure's past.
In early February, two hikers venturing through the picturesque foothills of the Krkonose Mountains in the Czech Republic made a startling discovery. What initially appeared to be a glinting object embedded in a stone wall turned out to be an aluminum can, which contained a remarkable collection of treasures. Inside this container, they found 598 gold coins meticulously arranged and bundled in black fabric, according to Miroslav Novak, the head of the archaeological department at the Museum of Eastern Bohemia. Not stopping there, the hikers soon found an additional treasure: a metal box filled with gold artifacts, including 16 snuffboxes, 10 bracelets, a comb, a chain with a small key, and an intricately designed powder compact. This astonishing find, valued at approximately $680,000, has captivated historians and treasure hunters alike, eager to uncover the identity of the person or people who buried these riches.Dr. Novak elaborated on the significance of the discovery, noting, “What is exceptional in this case is the volume.” He estimated the worth of the gold coins at around 7.5 million Czech Koruna, translating to about $340,000. The gold items from the metal box could hold a similar value, provided they are solid gold rather than gold plated. The recent nature of this treasure’s burial has intrigued experts, as most archaeological finds in the region date back to ancient times, stretching from the Bronze Age to the medieval era. Notably, the newest coin in this treasure was minted in 1921, suggesting that this cache was hidden within the past century—an unusual scenario for such finds in this historically rich area.As historians and amateur sleuths delve into this mystery, the hunt for the story behind the buried treasure continues, igniting curiosity about who may have hidden these valuable artifacts and the circumstances surrounding their concealment.
