In brief

In a significant revelation, Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk acknowledged the existence of a Russian scheme aimed at conducting air terror attacks against international airlines, posing a broad threat to air safety over the globe.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk shed light on alarming intelligence concerning potential acts of terrorism conceived by Russia, indicating that such plans extend beyond Polish territory to encompass airlines worldwide. “I can only confirm that Russia planned acts of air terror, not just against Poland but against airlines across the globe,” Tusk stated during discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Warsaw on Wednesday. While Tusk didn’t divulge specific details, there remains uncertainty about whether Russia continues to actively orchestrate these threats. Intelligence on these plots first emerged last summer when incendiary devices placed at shipping hubs in Germany and Britain led to fires, albeit with minimal damage. By November, various Western intelligence officials had informed that these incidents were likely trials conducted by Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU, designed to probe security responses.Although the exact objectives of this nefarious scheme remain unclear, intelligence investigations have been launched to determine whether the ultimate aim is to either destroy planes at American or European airports or detonate an aircraft mid-flight. Heightened concern over these plots prompted a serious response from the White House; in the fall, President Biden tasked his national security adviser and the CIA director to communicate to senior aides in Moscow that any such acts could instigate a harsh reaction from the United States. Such sabotage efforts causing mass casualties would be viewed as a severe escalation of tensions between Washington and Moscow, with U.S. officials signaling that Russia would be held accountable for potentially enabling terrorism.
