Brazilian Hiker Found Dead After Fall from Indonesian Volcano
A tragic hiking accident claims the life of a Brazilian tourist, as rescue attempts were hampered by difficult conditions.
A 26-year-old Brazilian tourist, Juliana Marins, has been found dead after falling from a cliff during a hiking expedition near the crater of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano in Indonesia. According to her family and rescue teams, Marins went missing on Saturday after the fall, which occurred around 6:30 AM local time during an early morning group hike.
Initially, Marins survived the fall and was able to call for help, prompting a frantic search by rescue workers. However, operations were complicated by the rugged terrain and inclement weather conditions. Rescuers reported that fog and slippery paths severely limited visibility, diminishing their chances of locating her quickly.
Despite multiple attempts over the next few days, Marins remained unresponsive as rescue teams scrambled to reach her. The chaotic scene was captured in drone footage, which showed her moving within a grey soil area, but when the rescue team descended nearly 300 meters to reach her, she was not in the same location and did not respond to calls. By Sunday morning, updates indicated that her condition had worsened, and she had presumably fallen further.
On Monday, rescuers again spotted Marins, but bad weather forced them to pause the operation. Finally, on Tuesday, after an exhausting search involving around 50 rescue workers, they were able to locate her body 600 meters down a steep ravine. While her body was reached, adverse weather conditions delayed its retrieval.
The incident has raised alarms about the safety of the hiking trails on Mount Rinjani, which attracts tourism but has witnessed several fatalities in recent years, including another climber last month. Marins' family expressed their gratitude for the support they received but raised concerns about why the trail remained open after the initial incident. As many seek adventure in Indonesia's beautiful landscapes, this tragedy underscores the potential dangers of hiking in such challenging environments.
