An avalanche in Uttarakhand, northern India, has claimed the lives of at least four individuals, with several others reported missing. The incident occurred on Friday in the village of Mana, which is situated near the Tibetan border, where road construction workers were buried under snow and debris.
Rescue operations commenced promptly, resulting in the successful retrieval of around 50 individuals from the avalanche site. Unfortunately, according to the Indian Army, four of these workers succumbed to their injuries.
As the search continues, helicopters have been dispatched to locate five individuals who are still unaccounted for in the Himalayan region. Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, emphasized that rescue teams are tirelessly engaged in relief efforts and pledged the government's commitment to assist those impacted by the disaster.
Video footage shared on social media by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police displayed rescue personnel carrying injured individuals on stretchers, navigating through deep snow even as conditions remained treacherous with ongoing snowfall.
Local resident Gaurav Kunwar noted that the area experiences seasonal migrations and is not permanently inhabited, primarily housing laborers engaged in border road construction during the winter months. He disclosed that the avalanche struck while workers were stationed at a camp, coinciding with two days of intense rainfall in the region.
The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy precipitation and snow across northern Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, with orange alerts for significant snowfall being activated in a number of districts in these areas.
