Inquest reveals details surrounding the fatal fall of 12-year-old Zhihan Zhao at Ireland's renowned Cliffs of Moher.
Zhihan Zhao, a 12-year-old boy, lost his life in a heartbreaking incident at the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Ireland, during a family holiday last summer. His slip, which occurred while he was attempting to navigate a puddle near the cliff's edge, resulted in a fatal fall that has drawn widespread attention and concern for safety in the area.
Witness Marianne Tourgon, a tourist from France, provided critical testimony during the inquest, describing the moment she saw Zhihan lose his footing. Tourgon recalled that as Zhihan fell, he desperately tried to grab onto the grass for support but was unable to prevent his plunge over the edge. "It was very quick," she recounted, noting that the incident occurred shortly after 1:45 PM on July 23.
Zhihan's mother, Xianhong Huang, was visibly distraught during the proceedings, having initially lost sight of her son while they were on the trail. She had last seen him walking briskly ahead of her and her friends before he vanished from view. In a heart-wrenching moment, Huang shared her anguish, asking what exactly led to her son’s tragic fall.
An extensive search operation, involving the Irish Coast Guard and local gardaí, was launched once Zhihan was reported missing. Tragically, it took five days for his body to be discovered by a local fisherman in the waters between Doolin and the Aran Islands.
Clare Coroner Isobel O'Dea confirmed that Zhihan died from multiple injuries consistent with a high fall, stating, "His death would have been very quick." She expressed her condolences to both Zhihan’s mother and father, who was not present at the hearing.
This incident marks the second fatal fall at the Cliffs of Moher within a span of three months, prompting local authorities to close large sections of the cliff trail for safety reasons. The tragic events have raised ongoing concerns about visitor safety at the scenic yet perilous site, especially as it becomes a focal point for discussions around preventing further accidents.
