**Exceptional Bravery Applauded After North Sea Tanker Collision**
Maritime company Crowley honors crew of Stena Immaculate following a harrowing incident.
The co-owners of the oil tanker Stena Immaculate, which collided with the cargo ship Solong in the North Sea on March 10, have honored the crew's bravery amid dramatic circumstances. The incident resulted in an explosion and fires on board, although the flames have since been extinguished. Tragically, one Filipino crew member from the Solong remains missing and is presumed dead, while the Russian captain of the cargo vessel faces charges of gross negligence manslaughter.
Crowley, the Florida-based company managing the Stena Immaculate, shared a photo of 19 of its 23 crew members on social media, emphasizing their quick, cohesive response during the emergency. Their statement read, “Our deepest gratitude and respect goes out to our 23 mariners… for their exceptional bravery.” They highlighted the crew's effective actions in containment and firefighting, which helped mitigate potential threats to the vessel's integrity and the marine environment.
The incident led to a mass rescue operation; 36 individuals from both vessels were safely guided to shore in Grimsby. The UK's Chief Coastguard announced that a search and retrieval operation would continue due to sightings of small plastic pellets, or nurdles, washing up on Norfolk beaches. While these pellets pose minimal toxicity, they can harm wildlife if ingested.
The container ship Solong’s owners confirmed that some of the containers on board contained nurdles, noting that the intense heat during firefighting efforts might have caused some openings to release their contents. The company stated they were actively working with the coastguard to limit any long-term environmental effects.
As officials monitor both vessels for safety, the RNLI praised the dedication of volunteer lifeboat crews who participated in the challenging rescue efforts. Meanwhile, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch is looking into the cause of the collision, as the situation continues to develop.
