South African Politician Dismissed After Controversial Pastor Visit

Floyd Shivambu of the MK party faces dismissal over his attendance at a church service led by a fugitive pastor.

Floyd Shivambu's recent removal as secretary-general of the uMkhonto weSizwe party underscores political tensions surrounding controversial religious figures in South Africa. The leader's visit to Shepherd Bushiri's church raises questions about party loyalty and criminal accountability.

The political landscape in South Africa has grown increasingly complex following the dismissal of Floyd Shivambu, a prominent official in the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party. His removal from the secretary-general position comes on the heels of a visit to the church of Shepherd Bushiri, a Malawian pastor facing serious legal issues in South Africa.

Shivambu, a member of the political party founded by former President Jacob Zuma, attended an Easter service at Bushiri's church in April, which has resulted in significant backlash. Shepherd Bushiri is infamously known for being arrested and charged with fraud in South Africa back in 2020. After being released on bail, he mysteriously fled back to Malawi, where he remains a free man despite South Africa's ongoing attempts to extradite him.

The MK party publicly announced Shivambu's dismissal, asserting that his actions contradicted the spirit and rules outlined in the party's constitution. Nathi Nhleko, an official within the party, highlighted the necessity for swift action, noting that Shivambu's trip was not sanctioned by the organization.

Despite the setback of losing his top position, Shivambu does retain his membership in the MK party and will continue his political career representing the party in the National Assembly. Reacting to his demotion, he expressed acceptance of the decision and looked forward to his new role.

Shivambu, who transitioned from the rival Economic Freedom Fighters party to MK less than a year ago, had quickly climbed to an influential role within MK. His elevation coincided with a significant electoral performance for the party, resulting in the ANC experiencing a loss of majority power for the first time since South Africa’s democratic elections began in 1994.

This incident not only highlights the complexities within South African politics but also raises critical conversations about the intersection of politics and faith—particularly concerning figures like Bushiri, whose influence continues to evoke both admiration and controversy across the region.
