Swedish-Turkish national Ismail Abdo, a leading figure in organized crime, nabbed during a drug bust in Turkey.
Ismail Abdo, a notorious leader of the Rumba crime gang in Sweden, was arrested in Turkey after an extensive international search. The 35-year-old dual Swedish-Turkish national has been implicated in serious drug trafficking and violent crimes and has remained a prominent target of law enforcement agencies around the world, notably since an Interpol red notice was issued against him last year.
The arrest took place during a large-scale operation where Turkish authorities detained a total of 19 individuals and reportedly seized over a tonne of illicit drugs. Information pertaining to the exact locations of the raids has not been disclosed. In addition to the arrests, police confiscated assets with an estimated value of 1.5 billion Turkish lira (around $38 million), including vehicles, bank accounts, and numerous real estate holdings.
Abdo's criminal enterprise has been linked to a surge in gang-related violence in Sweden, particularly as he has been at odds with rival gang leader Rawa Majida of the Foxtrot gang. This violent feud has claimed multiple lives, further escalating after the tragic murder of Abdo's mother in 2023, an incident that drew considerable public attention and alarm.
The escalation of gang violence has been so pronounced that Sweden's government sought military assistance to restore order. Interestingly, despite his active red notice status, Abdo was previously arrested briefly in Turkey in 2024 but released on bail, leading to criticism from Swedish authorities advocating for his extradition.
The Swedish government's center-right coalition, which was elected on promises to combat gang crime, may view Abdo's arrest as a critical victory. However, the fact that he holds Turkish citizenship could complicate any future extradition requests. Reports indicate that criminal gangs in Sweden encompass an estimated 14,000 individuals, with an additional 48,000 suspected associates, highlighting a pervasive issue within Swedish society.
