In brief

Amid recent escalations in conflict with Israel, many Iranians in Tehran are trying to escape the chaos, facing fuel shortages and communication breakdowns.

In the wake of rising tensions and violence between Israel and Iran, Tehran's residents are finding their city increasingly unlivable, prompting many to seek refuge elsewhere. The situation began on June 14 when Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Iranian cities, resulting in heavy civilian casualties. Since then, many people like Meisam, a 41-year-old poet from the capital, have sought to flee the unrest, with an influx of vehicles crowding the streets even late at night."There’s a cloud of uncertainty hanging over everything," Meisam remarked, illustrating the atmosphere of fear gripping Tehran. The violence has claimed more than 200 lives in Iran, as reported by the nation's health officials, while retaliatory attacks in Israel have resulted in over two dozen fatalities and numerous injuries. As the situation worsens, the Israeli military has issued specific evacuation orders for parts of northeastern Tehran, warning residents of imminent attacks on military targets. Compounding the turmoil, numerous residents have reported significant disruptions to internet and phone services, which may hinder communication and access to critical safety information for many who may not be connected to social media.Amid fuel shortages, with some gas stations shutting down altogether and others imposing strict limits on fuel purchases, residents are struggling to find ways out of the city. Reports indicate that even those who manage to get to open gas stations often face long lines, as panic and urgency spread through the populace. In this climate of fear and instability, Iranians are weighing their options for escape as they confront an uncertain future.
