Days after Meagan Brazil-Sheehan’s young son was diagnosed with leukemia, they met Robin the Robot at UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center. The AI-powered therapeutic robot greeted the boy enthusiastically, bringing a smile during a difficult time.
Robin is designed to provide emotional support to pediatric patients while assisting healthcare staff in their duties. Since its launch in the U.S. five years ago, it has become a familiar presence in numerous hospitals across California, Massachusetts, New York, and Indiana.
Karen Khachikyan, CEO of Expper Technologies, emphasized that Robin helps alleviate the pressure on medical staff, allowing them to focus more on critical care tasks. This innovative tool has proven effective in brightening the spirits of children who often feel isolated and stressed.
At HealthBridge Children’s Hospital in California, Robin engages patients by playing their favorite music, jokes, and games like tic-tac-toe, creating a comforting environment. Speech language pathologist Samantha da Silva noted that Robin not only remembers patients' names but also their preferences, lighting up their days.
Robin's design mirrors human emotions, reflecting happiness or empathy based on patients' feelings. Through interactive companionship, it also assists elderly patients in nursing homes, offering memory games and calming music to alleviate anxiety.
As the U.S. faces an impending shortage of healthcare providers, Robin aims to evolve further, potentially taking on vital tasks such as monitoring patients' vital signs and assisting with daily routines. The efforts to enhance Robin’s capabilities show the potential for AI to support rather than replace human healthcare workers, filling vital gaps in patient care.
Developed by Khachikyan during his Ph.D. studies, Robin emerged from a desire to combat loneliness he experienced growing up. After successful trials in pediatric hospitals in Armenia, it has now transformative potential for pediatric care worldwide.
As AI continues to integrate into everyday life, the supportive role of robots like Robin could represent a significant step forward in enhancing both patient experience and healthcare delivery.
