In brief

Nearly 13,000 residents of Santorini have abandoned the island due to relentless tremors, including a magnitude-5.2 quake. As authorities take precautionary measures, the future of the popular tourist destination remains uncertain.

In an alarming series of seismic events, the Greek island of Santorini has experienced relentless earthquakes since late January, causing widespread fear among its residents. As of last week, more than 13,000 out of the island's 15,500 inhabitants have opted to leave, transforming what is usually a bustling tourist hub into a ghost town.Santorini, known for its breathtaking views and vibrant tourism, typically welcomes over three million visitors each year. However, following a week of nearly continuous tremors, the usual crowds have thinned. Reports indicate that these tremors, occurring as often as every few minutes, peaked with a magnitude-5.2 quake northeast of the island. The seismic activity has disrupted the daily life of many residents and visitors, with majority of the locals fleeing the area.Vassilis Karastathis, director of the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens, revealed that the island witnessed an alarming 160 tremors exceeding a magnitude of 4 during the first nine days of February alone. This is a stark contrast to previous years, where a total of 90 similar tremors were recorded throughout the entire year. The situation escalated further with a magnitude-5 quake felt 150 miles away in Athens.Seismologists are grappling with the uncertainty of the ongoing seismic events. While Karastathis mentioned signs of stabilization, the possibility of further substantial quakes remains, urging caution. "A lot of the seismic energy has been released, but we still can’t rule out a large earthquake," he stated. In response, local authorities have taken preventative measures including the closure of schools, prohibiting large gatherings indoors, and deploying emergency workers across the island. Corners of Santorini have been secured due to fears of landslides, with preparations in place for potential evacuations on standby. Psychological support from organizations like the Red Cross has also been made available to comfort anxious residents, while religious leaders hold prayers in the hopes of an end to the alarming tremors. As the volcanic island deals with an uncertain future, the immediate focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of its remaining residents and visitors amidst one of the most significant earthquake swells in its history.
