In brief

A coordinated raid on a gated Lev Tahor community led to the rescue of numerous minors identified as potential victims of trafficking and abuse, prompting an investigation into serious allegations against the sect.

Guatemalan authorities made headlines on Friday when they executed a large-scale raid on a compound belonging to the Lev Tahor ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect, leading to the shocking revelation that over 160 minors may have been subjected to human trafficking and other serious crimes. The raid stemmed from the reports of four non-Guatemalan minors who escaped the tightly controlled community last month and alerted law enforcement to their plight.Prosecutors, while addressing reporters, confirmed that no arrests were made immediately during the operation. However, regional prosecutor Dimas Jiménez y Jiménez noted that there are potential charges being considered, which include human trafficking, forced pregnancy, mistreatment of minors, and rape. "We suspect these crimes were committed by a member of the community," stated Jiménez. Furthermore, the authorities uncovered graves on the premises, implying the presence of buried bodies. The special prosecutor on human trafficking, Nancy Lorena Paiz García, mentioned that there had been reports of possible fatalities among minors, warranting a thorough investigation.Early Friday morning, a massive force comprising approximately 480 police officers, soldiers, and other officials descended on the Lev Tahor compound, situated in the Santa Rosa region near the Mexican border. Their mission was to secure the area and ensure the safety of the minors. They seized various electronic devices as part of their probe, searching for evidence related to child pornography and employing detection dogs to identify any concealed human remains. This raid marks another significant effort by Guatemalan authorities to investigate the enigmatic Lev Tahor community, known for its reclusive lifestyle and controversial practices. The developments have raised alarms not only within Guatemala but also internationally, as the plight of children from the sect continues to attract scrutiny. As investigations proceed, the authorities are focused on uncovering the full extent of the alleged crimes and providing necessary support for the rescued minors.
