In brief
Amid rising tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Dutch authorities detained four individuals linked to antisemitic attacks on Israeli soccer fans following a recent match.
Article text: Dutch police confirmed that four suspects were in custody on Saturday as part of an ongoing investigation into antisemitic incidents involving Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam this past week. The disturbances started during a soccer match between Ajax, a prominent Dutch team, and Maccabi Tel Aviv, an Israeli club, during which significant violence erupted over two days.Initially, police detained 62 individuals who were involved in the clashes surrounding the match. Videos revealed Israeli supporters engaging in anti-Arab chants while being escorted by police near Amsterdam’s central train station. These measures were taken to ensure the safety of the fans amidst rising anger related to the ongoing war in Gaza. Notably, one of the chants questioned the dire situation in Gaza, calling attention to the struggle faced by children in the region. As tensions escalated, the police deployed riot units and mounted officers to separate the Israeli fans from pro-Palestinian demonstrators. Although the majority of those detained were released within a short time, four individuals remained in custody, facing allegations of public violence. One of these suspects, a 26-year-old man, was apprehended after being recognized from CCTV footage.Authorities clarified that the release of earlier detainees does not preclude them from further investigation. Dutch police spokeswoman Marijke Stor noted that other arrests may occurred as the inquiry progresses, although prosecutors had yet to press any charges. The situation remains tense as the investigation continues amidst heightened scrutiny over antisemitic sentiments and related violence.
