A Finnish court has made headlines by sentencing Voislav Torden, a 38-year-old former commander of the Russian far-right Rusich paramilitary group, to life in prison for war crimes committed in eastern Ukraine. This historic ruling comes following Torden's conviction on four out of five charges related to his role in an ambush in the Luhansk region in September 2014, which resulted in the deaths of 22 Ukrainian soldiers and injuries to four others.
Torden, who was also known as Yan Petrovsky and is linked to the notorious Wagner group, has repeatedly denied the allegations against him. The case marks a significant milestone in Finland, being the first of its kind to see war crimes associated with the Ukraine conflict tried in a Finnish courtroom. Finnish authorities revealed that Torden led the ambush by deceiving Ukrainian soldiers, thereby initiating a deadly confrontation.
The court's ruling revealed that there was insufficient evidence to conclusively tie the Rusich group as a whole to the ambush due to multiple involved factions. However, Torden was found guilty regarding his command of mercenaries who engaged in severe brutality during the attack, which included killing a wounded soldier and mutilating his body. The judges emphasized the "brutality and cruelty" of his actions, which were comparable to murder.
As a part of the conviction, Torden has been ordered to pay compensation to the victim's family. His defense team, described as "surprised" by the verdict, plans to appeal, asserting that there was no direct evidence pointing to Torden's involvement in the alleged murder of the wounded soldier.
Torden's arrest occurred at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in July 2023, at the request of the Ukrainian government. Although Finland's Supreme Court denied his extradition over fair trial concerns, this allowed Finnish legal proceedings to address war crimes charges, reflecting the increasing strain of international law on accountability issues.
Ukraine's prosecutor general welcomed the ruling as a critical achievement toward ensuring that perpetrators of serious humanitarian law violations are held accountably, echoing the country's commitment to pursuing justice in coordination with international partners.
