In brief
Juliana Marins, a Brazilian hiker in her 20s, fell about 1,600 feet while climbing Mount Rinjani on Saturday. Rescue teams are preparing to deploy a helicopter equipped with ropes to reach her as they attempt to locate her before worsening weather conditions complicate the search.
Rescue teams in Indonesia are urgently working to locate and assist Juliana Marins, a woman from Brazil in her 20s, who has been missing for three days after falling off a trail on Mount Rinjani, an active volcano. According to her family, she fell around 1,600 feet during a hike on Saturday morning while exploring the scenic mountain alongside a guide and other hikers. Indonesian rescue officials have confirmed that drone footage revealed Marins in a motionless state at some distance from the trail, intensifying the urgency of the search mission. Local authorities are now preparing to dispatch a helicopter equipped with 2,000 meters of rope to retrieve her from her precarious location, an operation deemed “very risky” by Muhamad Hariyadi, head of the search and rescue office in Mataram.Mount Rinjani, situated on the island of Lombok, is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, attracting many tourists with its breathtaking landscapes, including a stunning blue crater lake, known as Segara Anak. Hikers often embark on the journey for the panoramic views, particularly at sunrise. Marins himself had expressed her excitement about the hike in a video shared with loved ones, stating, “We did it for the view.” In another clip, a fellow hiker captured the dense fog surrounding the mountain, humorously commenting on their motivations for hiking as well. As the search continues, the hope is to reach Marins before adverse weather complicates rescue attempts, underscoring the precariousness of both the adventure and the environment surrounding such excursions.
