In brief

Nigerian police recovered more than 30 bodies believed to be fleeing bandits in Bukkuyum after an October assault, according to a spokesman. The operation follows earlier violence, including a February motorcycle‑mounted attack that killed at least 50 residents and abducted dozens. Ongoing security operations aim to clear armed groups from the area.

More than 30 bodies believed to be those of suspected bandits were recovered in Bukkuyum town, Zamfara State, after police repelled an attack on 28 October, a spokesperson for the local police said on Sunday.

Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson for the Zamfara State police, told Xinhua by telephone that bandits suspected of planning the assault clashed with security operatives in a gunfight on Oct. 28. He said most attackers fled the scene with gunshot wounds and that bodies found several days later were likely those of the fleeing bandits because the police possessed superior firepower.

Abubakar indicated that the corpses scattered across farmlands were recovered by security operatives and residents. “The corpses are believed to be those of the fleeing bandits due to the superior firepower of the security operatives,” he added.

Security forces are continuing operations in Bukkuyum to dislodge armed groups that have been active in the area.

The recent outbreak of violence is not isolated. In February earlier in the year, a group of armed men riding more than 150 motorcycles stormed a community in Bukkuyum, firing indiscriminately at residents and setting buildings ablaze. The attack left at least 50 people dead while dozens of women and children were abducted.

Banditry and kidnapping have a history of recurring problems in Nigeria’s northwestern region, a fact highlighted by the ongoing efforts of security forces to maintain stability in places like Bukkuyum.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether the bodies recovered are indeed those of attackers, but the prevailing belief among police is that the casualties are combatants who fled the confrontation with gunshot wounds, as stated by Abubakar.

Further details on the identities of the dead or the names of the bandits remain unpublicized, and investigators have not released a public list of missing or abduction victims from the February attack.

Police have stressed that the operation in Bukkuyum is part of a broader strategy to clear areas in Zamfara State of armed groups. The Force maintains that the recovered bodies’ death toll has reached over 30, a figure that surpasses earlier estimates of the attack’s casualties.

The community’s response to the recent discoveries has included reports that residents assisted in recovering the bodies, indicating a degree of cooperation with security operatives amidst the ongoing threats that have plagued the region.

As the police continue to assess the threat landscape, the recovered bodies underscore the persistent danger posed by bandit groups in the northwest, as well as the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian security forces in restoring peace.
