Police in Birmingham, Alabama, announced that a shooting that occurred after a football game on Saturday night left one person dead and eight others wounded, according to a police statement released by the Birmingham Police Department.

The incident took place on the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West, immediately outside Legion Field, the site of the Magic City Classic football game. Officer Darrell Freeman of the Birmingham Police Department said the gunfire erupted shortly after 7:50 p.m. local time (0050 GMT on Sunday).

Officer Freeman described the scene as follows:

"Officers responded and found multiple gunshot victims," Freeman said at a press conference.

The Defense Police confirmed that nine people were shot, one of whom was later pronounced dead. Among the wounded, one individual was reported in a critical condition, while the remaining seven were deemed to be in stable condition.

According to the police, investigators recovered multiple firearms at the scene, indicating an armed confrontation. A suspect was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning. The Birmingham Police Department has not released further information regarding the suspect’s identity or the motive behind the attack.

The timing of the shooting, occurring immediately after a major sporting event, raises immediate questions about whether the incident was related to the game or an unrelated crime. The city’s public safety officials have not provided any additional context about the motives or affiliations involved.

Police are continuing to investigate the scene, collecting forensic evidence from the firearms recovered. With the investigation still ongoing, no additional suspects have been identified, and the Birmingham Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward.

Although the city’s law enforcement officials have not yet unveiled details about the event’s broader implications, authorities stress that the incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by communities affected by gun violence, especially in areas surrounding high-profile public gatherings.

At this time, Birmingham’s residents and the wider community await further updates from the Birmingham Police Department regarding the suspect’s prosecution and any potential motives linking the shooting to the events surrounding the Magic City Classic.
