Chinese ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, spoke out vehemently against the United States’ recently imposed tariffs on India, labeling Washington as a "bully." Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Xu emphasized that China stands firmly in opposition to the steep tariffs, which have reached as high as 50%. "Silence only emboldens the bully," he remarked, highlighting the negative implications of these tariffs for international trade.

The tariffs, which were facilitated by former President Trump, include a 25% penalty on various imports from India, accentuating tensions exacerbated by India's increased Russian oil purchases. Following the start of the Ukraine conflict, India's acquisition of relatively inexpensive Russian crude oil has strained its relationship with the US, complicating negotiations for a potential trade deal. India defends its oil imports by citing its need to provide affordable energy sources for its vast population.

As the relationship between India and the US deteriorates, it appears that India and China are working to mend their historically fraught ties. The two nations' relationship deteriorated following violent clashes in Ladakh in 2020, but both parties have since made efforts towards normalization. Earlier this week, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Delhi, underscoring the need for India and China to approach each other as "partners" rather than adversaries.

During his remarks, Xu referred to India and China as "double engines" for Asia's economic growth, promoting the idea that collaboration would benefit not only both countries but also the broader global community. He urged India to provide a "fair, just, and non-discriminatory business environment" to facilitate Chinese investments in India.

Xu cautioned against the disruptions caused by ongoing tariff and trade wars, indicating that they threaten the global trade framework and international order. He affirmed that China would continue to ally with India in support of the multilateral trading system governed by the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Looking ahead, Xu expressed optimism regarding Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s forthcoming visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, viewing it as a potential catalyst for improving relations between the two nations.
