In brief
Local officials are assessing damage and searching for missing victims, with climate change exacerbating yearly flooding risks.
Floodwaters from relentless overnight rainfall surged through the town of Mokwa, Nigeria on Friday, resulting in a tragic death toll of at least 56, as confirmed by local officials. The scale of the devastation took authorities by surprise, leading to widespread displacement of families and destruction of homes and businesses in the area, located approximately 235 miles west of Nigeria's capital, Abuja. Key to the town's significance is its position at the crossroads of three major roads, making it a bustling trade hub for nearby villages. As the waters recede, local residents and officials are bracing for the grim possibility that the death toll may rise. Witness Umar Jamil, a shopkeeper who lost everything to the flooding, shared his harrowing experience, recounting the frantic attempts to alert neighbors to the impending disaster. "We had to knock on some doors, but before people could escape, the flood had already caught up," he relayed. "We have seen many bodies floating on the water, but we couldn’t help."Habibu Wushishi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in Niger State, which encompasses Mokwa, stated that search operations are ongoing and made known plans to establish camps to accommodate the hundreds of displaced residents seeking shelter. Seasonal rains in Nigeria, which generally persist from April to October, tend to bring heavy flooding across West Africa; however, scientists indicate that climate change has augmented the intensity of such weather phenomena in recent years. During the destructive flooding in 2022, Nigeria recorded over 600 fatalities and displaced 1.4 million people in what officials termed the worst floods in a decade.Despite prior predictions of possible flooding this rainy season, officials did not anticipate the devastating impact seen in Mokwa. Mr. Wushishi further clarified that forecasts had indicated flooding would be confined to regions surrounding rivers, while Mokwa, located far from water bodies, unexpectedly experienced severe flooding.Frustration amongst residents is palpable, particularly in light of prior flood warnings that have seemingly gone unaddressed. "There have been signs for a long time that a flood might occur here," Jamil lamented. "You can only imagine the magnitude of the pain inflicted on our people by this flood."
