In brief
Norwegian authorities have apprehended a 27-year-old security guard, Mohamed Orahhou, employed at the U.S. embassy in Oslo, on charges of espionage involving Russia and Iran.
Oslo's authorities announced this week that they arrested Orahhou, accusing him of divulging confidential information to representatives from Russia’s domestic intelligence service, the S.V.R., as well as Iranian officials. During police questioning, Orahhou reportedly confessed to this information sharing, though specifics about the leaked data remain undisclosed. A court hearing held in Oslo resulted in a four-week jail sentence for Orahhou, as law enforcement continues its extensive investigation into this “very serious case,” according to Thomas Blom of Norway's Police Security Service. This incident comes amid rising concerns about Russian espionage throughout Europe, particularly following several suspicious activities linked to Russian agents, including arson and vandalism. Recent revelations regarding an alleged Russian plot to use incendiary devices on European cargo flights have further escalated anxiety. U.S. intelligence officials have even alerted American defense contractors about potential sabotage risks tied to Russian operatives. Additionally, British MI5 chief Ken McCallum noted that Russian intelligence efforts were intended to instigate chaos in British and European urban areas.
