In brief
The FBI has detained Harpreet Singh in Sacramento, a man wanted by Indian authorities for his ties to a Sikh separatist movement and involvement in terrorist activities, including a grenade attack on a retired police officer.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced on Thursday the arrest of Harpreet Singh, a man sought by Indian authorities for alleged involvement in terrorist activities. Singh was captured in Sacramento after reportedly entering the U.S. illegally and using disposable phones and encrypted applications to avoid detection. Indian agencies have linked Singh to extremist groups, particularly Babbar Khalsa International, which is associated with the Sikh separatist movement. He is also accused of providing logistical assistance, funding, and ammunition to operatives back in India. This arrest follows India’s National Investigation Agency's announcement in January, which offered a cash reward for Singh's capture due to his alleged role in a grenade attack on a retired police officer in Chandigarh last September. In recent years, India has actively pursued multiple Indian nationals residing in the United States, with at least ten individuals facing warrants, including prominent figures like Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. The FBI’s capture of Singh is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to tackle overseas members of militant groups linked to separatist movements in India.
