In brief
In a year characterized by fierce rivalry in the electric car sector, Tesla reported a dramatic decline in its profits for 2024, reflecting the challenges it faces from an ever-expanding pool of competitors.
Tesla’s financial report released on Wednesday highlighted a profit of $2.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, a stark decrease from the $7.9 billion recorded in the same timeframe the previous year. The notable drop is attributed to a one-time tax benefit of $5.9 billion that bolstered the 2023 figures, as Tesla's operative profit, excluding this factor, plummeted by 23%. While sales showed a slight uptick, increasing to $25.7 billion from $25.2 billion in the last quarter of 2023, the overall financial outlook remained less favorable.Over the complete year, Tesla's profit stood at $7.1 billion, a marked decrease from the $15 billion achieved the year prior; however, sales grew marginally from $96.8 billion to $97.7 billion. To mitigate the effects of increased competition and maintain market share, particularly from rivals in China, Europe, and the US, Tesla has resorted to significant price cuts and offered low-interest financing options for buyers. These strategies, however, impacted profit margins adversely. The company has also expanded its market by selling energy storage batteries to utilities and various businesses, which helped bolster its performance amid sluggish car sales. Despite its efforts, the company continues to rely heavily on its two main vehicle models, the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV, while the competitive landscape grows increasingly crowded with a broader range of electric vehicle options from other manufacturers.
