NEW YORK (AP) — The Boy Scouts of America, now known as Scouting America, has endured a tumultuous period over the past decade. Following the inclusion of gay individuals and girls, the organization faced internal dissent and a significant bankruptcy declaration in 2020 due to historical sexual abuse claims. However, with a recent uptick in membership, the 115-year-old institution is showing signs of recovery, in part thanks to the ongoing loyalty of many religious denominations that align closely with Scouting's mission.
I tell parents this is the best time to be involved with Scouting America, especially through a Catholic unit, stated Bill Guglielmi of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, emphasizing a community thirst for values-based organizations.
The resurgence is attributed to a blend of traditional experiences like camping with modern activities such as AI merit badges, coupled with a strong spiritual foundation maintained through communal prayer. Bill McCalister, a scoutmaster for over four decades, emphasized that worship is integral to their gatherings, with many scouts viewing scouting as their church.
Diversity of Faith
Faith-based organizations represent 42% of Scouting America’s nearly 40,000 units, with the Catholic Church being the largest sponsor. Other denominations, including United Methodists and Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist communities, also contribute to scouting’s diverse landscape. Roger Krone, president of Scouting America, acknowledged that the organization’s commitment to character development and spiritual growth aligns well with its religious partners.
Scouting has adjusted to a more inclusive approach in admitting openly gay youth since 2013 and welcoming girls since 2018. This welcoming atmosphere is expressed in troop practices that incorporate varied religious beliefs.
For instance, Troop 228, chartered by a Catholic church, welcomes scouts of all faiths, underscoring that reverence can be shown in different ways. It doesn’t matter if you’re Catholic; a scout is reverent, said troop leader Christine Tezai.
Some faith communities have broken away, notably after the acceptance of gay members, leading to the formation of rival groups like Trail Life USA. Scouting America has acknowledged the departure of massive units, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, yet strives to appeal to families with open arms.
A Commitment to Values
Despite losses, many organizations remain committed to scouting's core principles, recognizing lessons learned from past mistakes and strengthening community ties. Sponsoring religious organizations, while facing the challenge of abuse-related liabilities, are discovering how these experiences can foster safer environments.
With a focus on inclusivity and character development, Scouting America aims to reinforce its mission: teaching young people essential values while nurturing spiritual growth.
